just daaaance

I know. I know. I didn't post yesterday. Let's just say...it was the Sabbath. Right? Right. But today's post is really good to make up for me slacking on a post yesterday. So, as you might know, I'm in dancEnsemble, our student choreographed dance company at BYU. I choreographed a piece for my first time in the show last semester and I loved it so I'm doing it again this semester. Last semester my dance was based on the 1930s dance marathons. It turned out to be a hit because my dancers were wonderful.
This semester my concept is a little less literal but I'm really excited.
Here is my concept: The dance is about how we as humans sometimes go through trials that we do not want to bother anyone else with, or we are not willing to let other people into our lives to help us. If we would only open up to others, they might be able to help us in ways we could not figure out on our own. There are two quotes that illustrate both sides of this situation (the person who needs help and the person who should be, or is helping the person going through the trial)

quote 1 (my favorite):
If each man or woman could understand that every other human life is as full of sorrows, or joys, or base temptations, of heartaches, of remorse as his own, how much kinder, how much gentler he would be.
-William Allen White

quote 2 (the main idea of the piece):
The person who tries to live alone will not succeed as a human being. His heart withers if it does not answer another heart. His mind shrinks away if he hears only the echoes of his own thoughts and finds no other inspiration.
-Pearl S. Buck

So we had our first rehearsal today and I am really excited about it. I have wonderful dancers who are all extremely talented. I videoed the end of our rehearsal today so I can continue to choreograph knowing how the dancers move. Obviously they just learned the movement and nothing is solidified yet as far as togetherness and what not. But here is the rehearsal. I am really excited to see how it develops!

  2. It's called Big Red Machine by Justin Vernon (the guy from Bon Iver) and Aaron Dessner. It will look better once it's done, of course.

p.s. the choreography is totally "kam" so you know you're doing well.
